Dreaming is a really beautiful thing to do, and yet when we do it, we feel easily ridiculed or classified as naive, escapist, or even arrogant. However, dreaming your dreams is neither crazy nor is it a luxury. Dreams are our compass. They guide us to our deepest needs, lead us to ourselves. But what if your dreams feel unreachable?
Hawai'i is my place of longing. And that's how it has been long before I was there for the first time – I can’t even explain why. Ever since I spent three months on the islands more than 20 years ago, I have dreamed of being able to stay there for a longer period of time or live there one day. Although I am convinced that our dreams guide us the way, these past years I just couldn’t see how to turn this dream into reality, especially with a family.
I had a mental block. Just as I experience it time and again with my clients on a wide variety of topics. I thought: "Hawai'i won't be an option until there is no more compulsory schooling for our daughter, or until she has left for college." That’s still quite some time down the road…
So, I had answered the question of whether it would be possible to realise my dream earlier than that with a clear ‘no’. Trapped in the ‘problem space’, I didn't even dare to look for the ‘solution space’. And that being a life coach, being someone who supports and encourages people to shape their lives in their own way. ‘Walk the talk’ looks different. High time to practice what I preach.
In a meditation at the end of last year, I decided to allow myself to dream big. Suddenly, it was no longer a question of whether, but merely a question of how. ‘If’ blocks. ‘How’ clears the way. Because in ‘how’ there is no ‘no’. There are only ideas that need to be weighed up or tried out. That is: How can it become possible? How can we make it work?
And with that, we already entered the solution space: What can be a first step in towards this goal? What needs to be researched? Who can be contacted? Who could help with the implementation? What would be an appropriate time? How can all this be financed? Why shouldn't this be possible?
I must admit that there is a lot of organisational work involved. But it is possible.
If everything goes according to plan, we will be on the other side of this world when the new school year starts.
Dare to dream! Because our dreams guide us to ourselves. They get us in touch with ourselves. And the closer we are to ourselves, the clearer things become, the easier it is to take a decision, the more confidently we navigate our lives.
Once your dream is clear, skip the ‘if’ and look directly for answers to the ‘how’. It is okay to go a bit bonkers. If you feel like you are coming up with completely absurd ideas, you may just be on the right track. And lastly, tell others about your dream. The more you talk about it, the more real it becomes. And the tailwind often comes as a gift. Aloha!
