Reading about successful personalities or celebrities, you'll often find that they have made a quote about goals their maxim in life. But are those sayings and adages true pieces of wisdom? Or are they just some beautiful but empty words that briefly make a good impression when skimmed over? For some people it is immediately apparent and they know exactly what the quote is aiming at. Others need some time to interpret it for themselves. And again others even use it outside of its original context.

"People with visions should go to the doctor." (Helmut Schmidt)

In this article you will find more than 70 quotes and sayings about goals to inspire you or make you contemplate. We wouldn't mind if one or the other even puts a smile on your face. Our collection of quotes is divided into the following four categories:

1. What are goals?
2. Why are goals important?
3. Set your goals.
4. Successfully achieve your goals.

What are goals?

Many people have goals that they want to achieve. They provide orientation and encouragement. They can be short or long term and should be realistic and measurable. We can set goals in all areas of life to motivate ourselves and achieve something. Of course, they can and should be different and individual from person to person. Therefore, a little help in finding, formulating and planning goals and their achievement can never hurt — especially from friends, family or professional coaches. Sometimes, however, even a quote from a well-known personality or someone unknown is enough to give us food for thought that shows us the way.

  • "The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be." (Ralph Waldo Emerson)
  • “You need lofty goals. Then cement it with a great work ethic.” (Jerry West)
  • “The goal is not to be better than the other man, but your previous self.” (Dalai Lama)
  • “The going is the goal.” (Horace Kallen)
  • “Dream your own dreams, achieve your own goals. Your journey is your own and unique.” (Roy T. Bennett)
  • “The greater danger for most of us isn’t that our aim is too high and we will miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it.” (Michelangelo)
  • “I think goals should never be easy, they should force you to work, even if they are uncomfortable at the time.” (Michael Phelps)
  • “Goals are dreams brought to life.” (Amy Leigh Mercree)
  • “One way to keep momentum going is to have constantly greater goals.” (Michael Korda)
  • “You should set goals beyond your reach so you always have something to live for.” (Ted Turner)
  • “A good goal is like a strenuous exercise — it makes you stretch.” (Mary Kay Ash)
  • “My personal goals are to be happy, healthy and to be surrounded by loved ones.” (Kiana Tom)
  • "A goal is not always meant to be reached, it often serves simply as something to aim at.” (Bruce Lee)
  • “A goal is a dream with a deadline.” (Napoleon Hill)
  • “A goal without a timeline is just a dream.” (Robert Herjavec)

Why are goals important?

Job interviews often ask what goals the applicant has for the near future. Some find it easy to spontaneously answer this question – and answer it in detail – while others have a constructed sentence at the ready for this exact question because it simply seems impossible for them to define a concrete goal for themselves. Rather, they live their lives from one day to the next without having a rough idea on where their journey of life should lead. This is completely fine. But it also helps people who are among the latter to see their way through a goal a little more clearly. Many people benefit from having a – more or less – defined goal to stick to. It provides motivation and orientation and gives support in rough patches of life not to lose sight of the horizon. For a bit of encouragement to set yourself goals and to get an idea of how different they can be, please read on.

  • “Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.” (Tony Robbins)

Set your goals.

What do you want to achieve? What are your goals? The clearer you are about them, the easier it will be for you to identify ways to reach them. Mind you, there probably isn't only one true way. Be patient with yourself uncovering different ones and don't be afraid to seek a new path if the first one didn't lead to your destination.

At the same time, everyone knows that it is difficult, or only possible with a great deal of coincidence, to reach a place you have never been without navigation aids or a map. So in conclusion, here are a few more quotes that are meant to encourage you to do a little bit of planning to reach your goal.
